So it's Memorial Day weekend and I just got out of bed. I turn on the tv to see what's on and what do I find playing? Battlefield Earth.
You may be like, what's Battlefield Earth? It's a horribly written, story about aliens that took over the Earth. The aliens are using humans to mine for gold and is led by an alien played by John Travolta.
I will admit that I always enjoyed this campy, sci-fi movie. I never thought it was a very good movie and I watched it for it's ridiculous storyline. Apparently, the movie takes place after the aliens took over the Earth and it's 1,000 years later. Humans have devolved to an illiterate bunch of humans and believe in 'Gods' again.
I won't get into it too much because I want you to enjoy the film as much as I did. Did you feel the sarcasm in that last sentence?
Now this movie has been mentioned numerous times as one of the worst films made. Won seven 'Razzies' in 2000, and was critically panned by movie critics.
Now the one thing I never realized and only discovered after watching the first few minutes of the ending credits that the movie was based on a novel written by L. Ron Hubbard. Yup! That L. Ron Hubbard of the Church of Scientology.
If you don't know anything about Scientology, just look up some of their more famous celebrities. The biggest one being Tom Cruise. Another? That's right, JOHN TRAVOLTA.
After finding out the movie was based on the novel written by Hubbard, it all made sense and perfectly clear why this movie bombed so badly.
So, have you seen this movie? What are your feelings toward it? Good? Bad? Indifferent? What's the worst movie have you ever seen?

While I agree the movie was terrible and L. Ron Hubbard's choice in religion is suspect, the book the movie was based on was actually pretty good. Granted, I read it when I was in high school, but from what I remember I actually liked it. The movie....well, that sucked.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Erik. I would consider reading the book, but knowing Hubbard wrote it, I would be ashamed if anyone found out!
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that the intention was to make a second movie if the first one did well. Thank god things didn't work out to their plans.
